It's time families start learning to take responsibility for their own lives and stop depending on government to solve all their problems. Universal Preschool is just one more step toward Socialism.

This group is for the purpose of planning strategies on:

  1. How to combat the implementation of government funded and/or mandatory Universal Preschool.
  2. How to empower parents with information and resources to help them feel confident and capable of teaching their little ones at home and/or with thoughtful use of privately funded preschool programs, co-ops, and homeschools.
  3. How to inform educators, government policy makers, and the media of our opposition to government funded and/or mandatory preschool programs.

U.S. government: We know parenting better than you The U.S. House is scheduled to debate two bills that could give the federal government unprecedented control over the way parents raise their children even providing funds for state workers to evaluate parents in their homes. The Pre-K Act (HR 3289) and the Education Begins at Home Act (HR 2343) are two bills geared toward military and families who fall below state poverty lines. The measures are said to be a way to prevent child abuse, close the achievement gap in education between poor and minority infants versus middle-class children and evaluate babies younger than 5 for medical conditions. by Chelsea Schilling July 24, 2008

I firmly believe that children all learn at their own pace and that forced academics are bad for children. I am currently organzing a home daycare providers fair in my town for daycare providers to strut their stuff and show parents that we offer thier kids more than institutional daycares/preschools.

I am interested in stopping the universal preschool legislation here. I have already spent ten years as an anti-public-school activist, so I am already totally familiar with the enormous failings of the system that our government intends to expand.

Doubts cast on preschool proposal If approved by lawmakers, Illinois would be the first state in the nation to offer so-called universal preschool to 3-year-olds and the fourth state to offer such access to 4-year-olds. The program--a minimum 2 1/2-hour school day--would not be mandatory, and many families would likely stay in private preschools. Blagojevich's plan would cost an extra $135 million in the initial three years, with the price tag in outlying years still uncertain. by Diane Rado and Rick Pearson February 13, 2006

I feel increasingly passionate that we who value family time and do not want the government designing family structure need to be more alert to the bizarre politics arising to threaten our freedom of choice, freedom of lifestyle, and freedom of religion. Because you lose all three when the government has control of your little ones for 8 or 9 hours a day!!! I also feel that all the current push to get equal pay for moms, jobs for all mothers etc. ignores the importance of stay-at-home moms.

Living and learning with our children with little outside interference is a valuable freedom to protect. Certainly, some programs might be helpful to families, but we must remain vigilant that these programs are optional and that they don't become required putting those who don't choose to use them in the position of finding a way to opt out.

As a homeschool advocate in Ohio, I monitor legislation. A Ohio newspaper reported: "In fiscal year 2006, the state will provide $94 million for the Early Learning Initiative Program... That will increase to to $113 million in 2007." The Early Learning Initiative program, jointly administered by the Department of Education and the Department of Job and Family Services, provides:

-Early learning and child care to income-eligible children, and effectively eliminates Head Start.

-Establishes a program to support ECE (preschool) programs offered by school districts and educational service centers to serve preschool children whose families earn up to 200% of the federal poverty guidelines.

-Prohibits specified ECE programs from receiving state funds in fiscal years 2006 and 2007 unless at least 50% of the program's teachers are working toward an associate degree and, beginning in fiscal year 2008, prohibits any such program from receiving state funds unless all of the program's teachers have an associate degree.

-Permits an accredited Montessori program that is licensed as a preschool program to combine three- to five-year-old preschool children with kindergarteners.

Pre-K bill headed to Douglas' desk MONTPELIER -- Lawmakers reached a deal on the rules around state funding of early childhood education - that pitted those who want universal coverage against those who worry about increasing the cost to the education fund and the future of private nursery In the end, they split the difference. School districts will get state assistance in providing education to half of their 3- and 4-year-olds if they choose to do so. But if they provide those services to more than that number, local taxpayers will have to put up the additional money. by Louis Porter and Sarah Hinckley May 25, 2007

Senate Bill Number 1214 The General Assembly finds that Virginia educational research supports the conclusion that poor children are more at risk of educational failure than children from more affluent homes. The General Assembly hereby establishes a grant program to be disbursed by the Department of Education to schools and community-based organizations to provide quality preschool programs for at-risk four-year-olds who are unserved by Head Start programs and for at-risk five-year-olds who are not eligible to attend kindergarten. by John S.
